“Welcome each other into your homes without grumbling.
Serve each other with the gifts and graces that you have received….
Whenever someone serves, let her do it with the power that God has given her,
so that God may be glorified in all things through Jesus Christ.”

1 Petr.4,9-11.

Gastenhuis

Hospitality is an important value in the monastic life. St. Benedict teaches us “to receive all guests as Christ himself” (RB 53), with the same reverence, respect and care. We sisters in Koningsoord are eager to make this a reality in the hospitality that we show our guests in our guesthouse. It is a part of our Cistercian tradition and is based on evangelical hospitality. We gladly welcome you to be our guest, either alone or as a group. We can accommodate about 15 guests at a time.

Voor wie dan staat onze abdij open?
Who is welcome in our abbey? In principle, every person, regardless of religious affiliation, is welcome in our abbey. Everyone who:

  • is seeking the meaning of existence;
  • wants to join in the prayer of the community;
  • is seeking a place of stillness for reflection, silence or prayer;
  • who wants to take time to feel at home with himself, with God, with others, in silence or by reading an inspiring book;
  • wants to free himself briefly from the hectic pace of everyday life;
  • is wrestling with his faith and wants to try to work things out in an atmosphere of silence and prayer.

That is why we gladly include our guests in the rhythm of our prayer life. Prayer is, after all, our vocation, and a gift that we share with each person who wants to be our guest. “I was a stranger….,” says the Lord, “and you received me.”

The length of a visit:
You may visit as guest for one or more days, but usually not longer than a week. Each guest has a room on the second or third floor of the guesthouse. The guests eat together in the dining room downstairs. Breakfast is in silence, in order to give each other the opportunity to peacefully attend to what he or she is interiorly experiencing. There is time for a coffee (or tea) break in the morning and in the afternoon. We appreciate it when the guests help with setting and clearing the tables and washing the dishes.

There is a beautiful garden to enjoy, especially when the weather is good. There are also books available that you are free to read during your visit if you wish.

The cost for your stay in our guesthouse is 23 euro per day. There is a special rate for school groups. If you want to make a reservation, you can call between 3:30 and 4:30 p.m. from tuesday untill friday. Our telephone number is 013-533-4901. Or you can send us an e-mail at: gastenhuis@koningsoord.org. We do not receive guests on the first Sunday of each month or on special feast days. These are Days of Recollection for our community.

Buiten is het goed toeven.

“Many Scripture passages demand an ever-vigilant attentiveness for the spirituality of hospitality. The fact that each person who receives hospitality really is Christ himself is vitally important.”
(Martijn Schrama: God in de ander; pg. 21).
